Your Sablefish is caught in a sustainably-managed fishery with responsible fishing methods, and is 100% traceable from boat to plate. Your purchase supports a small-scale, family-owned fishing operation, which in return supports a hardworking coastal community, which supports the next generation of young fishermen.

Your Sablefish is caught with longline fishing gear aboard the F/V Dangerous Cape, a 58-foot family-owned fishing boat from Homer, Alaska. The fish is carefully handled by the boat's three-person crew, tucked into ice, and brought back to the boat's home port of Homer, Alaska for custom processing. The catch is processed by a local, family-owned company, Coal Point Seafoods, on the Homer Spit.

The F/V Dangerous Cape is owned and captained by husband and wife Erik and Lacey Velsko, life-long Alaskans who use the boat to longline for sablefish and halibut, pot fish for Pacific Cod, and tender for the Prince William Sound salmon purse seine fleet each year. Erik graduated from the California Maritime Academy in 2005 with a BS in Marine Transportation and a minor in law. Erik is on the Board of Directors for the North Pacific Fishing Association based in Homer and is also a member of the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council IFQ Committee. Erik holds a 1600 Ton Master Oceans license, has been involved in Alaska’s commercial fisheries since a very young age, and has been a part of many of Alaska’s iconic fisheries. Mr. Velsko is a strong advocate for second generation Alaskan fishermen, and works tirelessly to ensure their future when he’s not on the water. Erik and Lacey's three young kids Britta, Estelle and Leo love helping on the boat and are already stepping up as the next generation of sustainably-minded commercial fishermen.

Sablefish has succulent, rich flavor and velvety texture. Sablefish swim free in deep, cold waters of the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska, which is how this premium whitefish develops the rich oil content that gives it its distinctive flavor and texture. Also known as Butterfish or Blackcod, Sablefish is very versatile in the kitchen; its flaky, silky-texture can be baked, broiled, poached, or grilled to prepare a delicious, savory and decadent meal.

Sablefish is an excellent source of heart-healthy, omega-3s. Though its oil content is high, these fats are mostly polyunsaturated. Sablefish is a good source of potassium and an excellent source of high-quality protein.
